Better than GT-Air!
For perspective - I also have a Shoei GT Air. Is the Spartan as well made as the GT-Air? No, definitely not got the attention to details - but is more than £100 cheaper. Is it quieter than a GT Air? Yes, for me. There is a much tighter fit under the chin, cheeks and neck roll such that I don't get the howling wind like I do on the GT-Air. (I do wear earplugs too). There are some random whistles which the GT-Air might have too but are drowned out by the howling noise. I did adjust the visor on the Spartan slightly for a tighter fit too. Who would it suit? It seems well developed for Naked bikes (e.g. Monster / R Nine T) as in free air the noise control is very good, but gets noisier when turbulent - i.e. ducking down. The visor works better for coverage than the GT-Air as it comes all the way down (and looks cool) but even in summer I can see a little fogging on the bottom edge from heaving breaths at slow speeds so might be an issue in cold weather. The GT-Air sun visor fogs in winter. Fit: I take a L in Shoei and L on the Spartan is equally comfortably on the top of the head (similar head shape?) but much tighter on the cheeks - almost too tight when new. But this keeps it quiet. Looks: Looks awesome without the need for tinted visor. I would definitely get another and only caveat is wait to see winter performance on sun visor.
Having previously owned the Speed R, changing to the Spartan shouldn't of seemed like such a big upgrade, but I'm blown away by this helmet. From the subtle helpfulness of having a foldable chin curtain rather than a removable one, to the Shark fins on the visor locking system seriously reducing wind whistle at high speed, this helmet is just simply superb. It looks fantastic and the quality can be felt throughout. Buffeting at high speed? What buffeting. The venturi wings on the back and the diffusers around the bottom certainly do a good job at keeping your head stable. Simply superb helmet. Top class service from SBS goes without saying.
After living with a Nolan N87 for a year, I wanted to upgrade to a higher end helmet and I made the perfect choice. Incredibly light and comfortable, a little bit tight on the cheeks at first but after a little bedding in, the helmet feels perfect. The cooling is great for hot days, visor does not steam up on cold wet days (of which there has been a few in good ol Scotland) compared to my Nolan. At 50mph this helmet is quieter without ear plugs than my Nolan was at 50 with ear plugs. Can't recommend this helmet enough. Excellent build quality and perfect service from Sportsbikeshop as always!
Worth the money
Bought this to replace my aging Shoei Quest. Chose the Shark Spartan because I like the aggressive look and was impressed with the range of colour options on offer. It was relatively easy therefore to find one to match my bike. I wear glasses and so it was important to me that any helmet I bought would aid and not hinder be need to wear them. The Spartan has neat spaces to either side of the helmet that allows the arms of your glasses to slide in very easily. It was always a struggle to get my glasses in and over my ears with the Shoei so I'm pleased to say that is no longer an issue. I also really like the integrated sun visor. The slider mechanism on top is easy to find on the move and the visor slides down over my glasses with no trouble at all. I can leave my shades at home now! I'm not sure on the vents. The Spartan has a chin bent which can be set to open or closed. In the open position it sends a curtain of air up the inside face of the visor. This works exceptionally well at reducing fogging and I'm really pleased about this. If you then open the top vent then that curtain of cool air flows up over your head and put through the back vents. It does a really good job at keeping your head cool. With the chin vent in the closed position, it doesn't prevent air entering the helmet. Instead you feel the air across your mouth and chin. I'm under the impression that if the vent is closed then it shouldn't let any air at all however I'm sure I will be grateful of it in the warmer months. In colder weather it's a bit of a pain though because you just can't isolate the cold air coming in. It's a minor niggle for me. I ride an upright, naked bike. I was really looking for a helmet that would suit this style of riding and I think I've found a good option in the Spartan. I don't feel any buffering at speed, it's light and remains comfortable for long periods of time (two hours is the longest I've worn it for in a single journey). In terms of wind noise, this is a difficult one to answer. There is certainly no turbulence from under the helmet or around the chin. I find I need to wear ear plugs with this helmet. I never felt that with the Shoei although I would say that was definitely noisier than the Spartan! Work that out. I can only assume it's down to the Shark spin technology which I think does a good job at muffling ambient noise and wind roar, but something is getting through - something inaudible that means if I don't wear plugs then my ears will ring for a short time post ride. Again, this is a minor niggle and could be down to my Street Twin's loud pipes. Overall, I'm impressed and am happy with the purchase.
New quality helmet
Very good quality helmet. Good fit and very comfy. It is also very light and has the best field of vision of any helmet I have had before. The sun visor is very good and with the Pinlock fitted to clear visor have no problem with misting. I found all the vents and the sun visor easy to use with a gloved hand. Only minor thing as has been said before, there is a slight whistle but with ear plugs this is not a problem. Thanks to Sportsbikeshop for your excellent service, will be coming back again, CHEERS.
My 2nd helmet since I started riding only 4 months ago and a huge improvement from my 1st. Pinlock visor has been fantastic in the cold & wet conditions. Very comfortable and secure lid. Double d ring strap is reassuring. Air vents are efficient and easy to use, as is the dark visor. Great value for money.
Lightest most comfortable helmet yet
Was a little cautious about ordering online but Sportsbikeshop had the helmet in orange to match my KTM - also concerned on size as guide said one size down from my Shoei (red so no longer any good) - I called and had great service and reassurance about sending back if needed - helmet arrived very quickly and perfect fit - also well packaged - very impressed with helmet and service.
Smart helmet. Carbon fibre looks great. Really light and comfortable once on. Bit of a squeeze to get my head in but I am between sizes and went for the smaller helmet. There is a whistle at speed even with the vents closed. Otherwise I'm really happy with it so far. Thanks.
Good quality and lightweight
Good quality helmet, with excellent field of vision, aerodynamics, weight and pinlock. Visor works well. Opening to get your head in is quite small, so disrupts any neck buffs a little. Folding chin curtain is a nice touch. Vents and sun visor can be tricky to use while riding.
