Bell Race Star - Ace Cafe Speed Check Matt Black / Gold
Customer Product Reviews
I've always been an Arai M size so was somewhat surprised to need to go up to a L despite still meeting the requirements for an M! The lid is very light, very quiet and visibility is amazing, almost can see any of the lid in your peripheral vision. Very simple to remove the visor for cleaning or to swap.
Finally! A perfect fit and comfy too.
First of all, sportsbikeshop have been fantastic. I've ordered and returned several helmets as I tried to find something that fit my head shape perfectly, and there were never any issues returning them. I tried the Shoei NGX but that was slightly too round, and the Bell Star MIPS, but that had a slight gap in the middle of the forehead section that I could insert a finger into. I had read that the Race Star had a slightly snugger fit because of the flex system and that certainly appeared to be the case here. The fit of the Race Star was perfect. I'm a 60cm intermediate oval and the large fitted like a glove. I did notice some pinching on my cheekbone and near the temples, and established it was the cheek pads that were pressing too much. Everyone is different so this may not be an issue for you. Anyway there are options out there for these helmets and so I ordered a set of 25mm Bell replacements (the helmet came with 35mm pads) and now it is very comfortable indeed while still fitting very snuggly and holding everything in place. The helmet design is stunning. I love the contrast between the matte carbon and the lacquered carbon, and the gold trim ties it together beautifully. The helmet also comes with a pinlock visor so that's a big bonus indeed! Delighted with the service and a happy bunny with the helmet.
The pictures don't do this justice. It looks so much better in person. The matt and gloss carbon is sublime and the gold lines give it that premium edge above the rest. The fit is snug but very comfortable and the visor gives panoramic view of the roads ahead. The air vents are easy to use with gloves and its really light weight. The aerodynamics are brilliant. The only thing I wish it had is a photochromic / transitions lens option.
Excellent helmet - Tight fit
This is a superb helmet, very lightweight and very good looking. Came with a Pinlock and a nice carry bag too. Props to SBS as I originally ordered a Large and it felt tight so exchanged for an XL which felt too big. SBS allowed me to exchange again for a L, which still feels tight but will shape to my head over time. I thought that was great service from SBS. As other have said, no room for speakers in the helmet but you can use in ear speakers if it's a must.
Great helmet, comfy and good safety
Overall, very happy with the helmet. It is comfortable for intermediate oval head shapes, good port for vision, lightweight, looks awesome and good airflow. With regards to airflow, whilst it is good, in the cold and wet you still get a little more than I would like. Changing the visor is so simple with the click of a button both sides of the visor. There is a bit of whistling at higher speeds but maybe I need to play around with the vents a bit more so might just be me. If you are familiar with Bell helmets and some of their older iterations, you will know they had cutouts in the EPS liner to hold speakers for Bluetooth communicators, well these new 2016+ Bell helmets don't so if you are looking at using a Bluetooth communicator, be aware. To summarise, really good helmet and would recommend, reason I gave 4 instead of 5 was, no cutouts for speakers and I personally think it should come with the transitions visor as standard.
The 'haute couture' helmet
If you want to wear a helmet that nobody has, if you are not making any compromises on quality, design, functionality, then this is the helmet you need to get! Everything has been studied to offer a product which matches my expectations as I own a Kawasaki H2: aerodynamics, large vision shield, low noise level, light weight... for the ones who want to be different.
