Superbly subtle replica

Bought this as my 1st helmet so don't really have anything to compare it too, but very comfy and fits great, possibly a tad tight around the cheek bones but having tried the next size up this is definitely the right size. Looks awesome, great design and very subtle for a replica. And the discount makes it even better. Arrived exactly when SBS said.

Icon Airmada - Thriller Black
August 26, 2016

A sleek, eye-catching, sublime helmet

The Icon Airmada - Thriller Black looks and performs great. Quality overall is very good, the helmet feels sturdy and the design is admirable. There are multiple air vents at the front of the helmet (head, forehead, and chin), as well as twin channel exhausts, which really aid the ventilation system in doing the great job it does. The Prolock Visor Locking System requires some force to release, but that could be considered a good thing. The breath deflector is flawless, even talking with the helmet on wasn't a challenge for it in keeping the visor clear. The field of vision is great. It fits well (size: L) and is very secure thanks to the Double-D chinstrap. What really catches the eye is the graphics on the helmet, and Icon know that. You'll be paying more money than you would for a highly rated Composite Fibre constructed helmet (e.g. AGV K5) for the Airmada Thriller. I was more than willing to make that sacrifice for such a great looking helmet (it looks even better in person). The only downfall is the "Rapid Release" visor change system. Whilst you can remove the visor itself quickly, there are plastic shields on each side which require a lot of force to remove, and can be quite easily damaged. That's the last thing anyone wants to do to their brand new helmet. If it wasn't for this, the rating would have been 5/5. A highly recommended helmet for those that want to look badass out on the road or track.

Shoei Qwest - Gloss White
August 26, 2016

Protective, reasonably quiet and comfy helmet

1.) Sizing and fit: My head size is 36.5 inches so I am right in the middle of the Small and Medium sizing. I tried both sizes and opted for the Small. My experience was that it was a very snug fit on first use. No real problems getting on, but at first fairly painful to take off (big ears don't help). I spoke to Shoei customer service for some advice and they gave me two options 1.) stick with it as the cheek pads will give over time (their recommendation) 2.) purchase the 33mm cheek pads as this would provide a bit more room. I chose option 1 and it has dramatically improved with us. I have worn it for about an hour and a half max. It is very comfy to wear (for me) with no pressure points to report. I also tried on the Shoei NXR (the gloss white is a comparable price point) and Shoei GT air (more expensive, but lighter and has integrated sun visor). The NXR didn't fit my head shape at all, but the GT air was also a good fit. This might be unique to me! I am a speccy and I have no problem wearing either my normal or sunglasses in this helmet. 2.) Noise levels I haven't long completed my DAS course so I only have limited experience of use in different conditions. As other reviews have stated at 40 mph and below it is very quite. Definitely quieter than the £45 Frank Thomas helmet I was wearing on my first two lessons. I live near the coast and did a few lessons in very high wind and the helmet remained pretty quiet. On the higher speed roads (50-60 mph) the wind noise was louder, but not excessive in my opinion. My general view is that for longer higher speed travel where noise is bound to increase you should wear some earplugs anyway if you can. The vents make a difference to noise level, but that isn't exactly breaking news. There are some reports of whistling when the vents are open. I haven't experienced this yet. Make sure you get a good fit to help reduce noise. The GT air is supposedly quieter. 3.) Features Pinlock works really well. No fog to report. My comparative is the Frank Thomas helmet I wore - which fogged up frequently. It loses a star because only the cheek pads are removable. Meh. I will Frebreeze it. Field of vision is wide. Vents are good. SBS supplied it with a free race visor (not road legal). I chose the tinted one. It also came with a Oxford tool kit. 4.) Safety Its a relatively oldish helmet design from 2010, but looks good IMO and importantly it gets a 5 star SHARP rating. My own view is that Sharp is the best available way to compare the safety of helmets that fit you well. It compares favorably to the GT air (a 3* with a terrible side impact result) which also fit me well. I bought it in gloss white to try and stand out a bit more for drivers. No high vis options/designs available which is a shame. 5.) Value-for-money: I paid £250 which I think is good value-for-money for a comfortable, reasonably quiet IMO, and reportedly protective helmet. Ride safe.
