Advice & Guides If it feels like armour in your bike kit then the law demands it is actually proper, protective armour. Here's how to tell how effective your impact protection is...

What a jacket this really is. Amazing quality. Strong and warm. I have no doubt of its ability to protect me. Also looks brilliant
Incredible jacket. Warm and snug. Feels like it would protect in an off and gives me total confidence on my rides. Very generous and true to size like all Merlin gear. Highly recommended
I’m leaving a review after having the jacket for a year. It’s a good jacket and I like most things about it but not all hence the 4 star rating.
Good points: Looks good, is comfortable, warm enough with liner in and long gloves down to about 5*c, cool enough with liner out and top buttons open to about 25*c, waterproof unless in heavy persistent rain, armour sits well, good pockets (lower outer ones not waterproof). Seems to be lasting well, no real wear showing and I use it daily in all weather.
Bad points: The sleeves come up a little short and they are very wide, this is ok for wearing long gloves under the sleeves but over the sleeves can have a bit of clashing, there is a button adjuster but it’s very crude and makes the material bunch up. If wearing short gloves the wind goes straight up the sleeve, although in the summer this can be refreshing most of the time it’s not and it’s only a matter of time until a wasp makes its way up there.
Secondly, I ride a lot of different type of bikes, the lower brass buttons could scratch fuel tanks etc on bikes with clip ons if a tank protector isn’t fitted, I choose not to wear this when test riding sports bikes etc at work.
Lastly, the liner does fit well, easy to fit/remove but it would benefit from a storm flap, in very cold weather you get a cold breeze through the middle.
Just a wow of a jacket!
Without the thermal liner I can wear out in the heat now and I can’t wait for the Autumn Winter rides to really test it out !
Fits well, comfortable and seems good quality. Not used in rain yet.
Have only had a few weeks but I went away for a long weekend with it with a mix of rain and shine and it performed really well. Very comfortable and relaxed, no water came in and it was never too hot with the liner in. I look the liner out for a warmer day and it was even nicer and not too hot. Not tried in really hot weather yet.
Perhaps unfairly I have the impression that Merlin is not in the top-flight of biking gear but this jacket impresses me the more I use it and makes me question my view of the brand. It feels very robust and comfortable and looks great on a wide range of bike styles. It has kept me warm on very cold days and cool with the vents open on hot days. My only criticism relates to the cuffs where there are two issues; firstly the adjustment straps do not go over the zip closure therefore tightening the straps pulls the zips open, and secondly the lining at the cuffs is cotton (I think) which gets wet in rain and being non-waterproof material it transfers water up your arms inside the jacket. This latter point spoils what is otherwise very impressive water resistance throughout the rest of the jacket. If they fix the cuff issue, I’d give the jacket a five star review.
Can't find fault with this jacket so far. Very comfortable and looks great. Ride a GS and wanted to get away from typical adventure style clothing. Stayed dry in light and prolonged (2hours) rain and warm when down to 9 degrees. Service at Boston SBS was excellent with staff very helpful.
Great service from SBS, fast delivery. Jacket is perfect, true to size, D30 and a reassuring weight. Warm with the liner in. Looks great too!
Jacket arrived in good time, well boxed and the sizing was spot on. Looks to be high build quality with discrete D30 protection and a weight you'd expect. Wearing it during rides felt instantly comfortable, with freedom for movement on the arms and shoulders without being too loose. The vents work ok in the hotter weather. I've yet to wear it with the liner and in the wet. The styling has drawn quite a few positive comments during bike meets. I'm a fan of the jacket (new to Merlin gear) and can easily recommend it. Of course, SBS service was their usual excellent standard.
Despite needing to travel for over an hour I bought this from the Bristol store rather than online because I wanted to try a number of jackets for size and fit. Initially the Perton 2 was not on my list but when I was shown it and tried it on I could immediately see that it was a high quality garment fully justifying the relatively modest addition cost. Very happy with the jacket in practice. I'm quite tall and slim and my only slight criticism is that adjustment of the waste is limited when the liner is removed. But perhaps that common to jackets that are used all year round. First class service from Sportsbikeshop with a number of alternative jackets. available to choose from.
I've tried and had a lot of leather jackets. Never a cotton jacket for bike riding. Must say i'm having doubts, going back to leather jackets.
The style of the jacket and all the included protection in the jacket, makes it a top notch jacket for me.
I'm 183cm, weight 78kg. Athletic build. I went with size M. Perfect for me.
