If it feels like armour in your bike kit then the law demands it is actually proper, protective armour. Here's how to tell how effective your impact protection is...
I have been searching for an alternative to my tatty old leather jacket and have been looking at Merlin waxed cotton jackets for quite a while trying to work out which one I should get. I was ideally hoping to find something for all seasons, that is probably a bit too much to ask but we'll see.
I could have got away with a smaller size but it's plenty big enough to get more layers under it in Winter, it fits over my leather jacket if I remove some of the protection first although that would be very heavy !
I've been wearing it every day for a couple of weeks and it's still not fully broken in, I only used the thermal layer one time, it has a moderate amount of insulation, not enough for very cold weather unless you layer up.
The weather has gone very warm this week and I have discovered the limitations of the ventilation but with the cuffs unfastened the main zip open and just a couple of press studs fastened at the front you can increase the airflow a lot while you are moving !
When I first got it I had to wipe it down quite a lot with old towels to take off some of the excess 'wax' which feels more like light oil and covers your hands etc, after wiping most of this off it is less of a problem but I'm hoping it will stop coming off eventually. It leaves oily patches on everything it touches including my bike seat, not sure if this is normal but I had a Belstaff jacket many years ago and don't remember this happening. I'm guessing it's just because they used a very thin type of wax and when the time comes to reapply the wax I can use a heavier grade to avoid this.
Overall I'm happy, it's very good quality and I haven't found any flaws or defects at all, more pockets than I need and definitely a good alternative to a worn out old leather jacket.
I purchased a Merlin wax jacket from sportsbikeshop and the staff were very helpful and helping me try jackets on for size The jacket fits great Feels really comfy and snug and looks great on my Bonneville motorcycle.
Great products
Had jacket a couple of weeks and have worn it out riding most days. First impressions were that out of the box jacket felt a quality product, I bought a 3xl and fit is spot on (48" chest)
Found it to be comfortable whilst riding, temperature around 7-12 degrees and at no time felt cold. On one ride I saw a jet black cloud and made straight for it hoping to try jacket in the rain, 10 mins later it threw it down, my boots leaked, my trousers leaked but not my Merlin jacket, safe to say best jacket I've had.
Very warm, waterproof and loads of pockets.
I am 42 chest. Every bike jacket I have is a size large and the large in this fits perfectly with the thermal liner in.
The vents don't do much and the outer pockets are too small for most phones.
Style is great for off the bike as well as on. Quality of finish, trim and fittings first rate. Bought for summer ride outs but warm enough for to use on year round.
The Product I bought from superbikeshop Merlin Yoxall 2 Silk Wax Textile Jacket - Olive is top draw & to go with it the service was equally top draw
A very well fitting jacket. Understated looks which match the retro vibe. Warm and feature packed with plenty of room for wallets, phones , keys etc. Not been out in the rain yet but have had Merlin products before and have never had cause for complaint.
Really nice jacket. Traditional, heavy, wax-cotton but with different (more modern I think) styling compared to say the Edale. Generous fit to allow for layers underneath. For the price you really can't go wrong with either this or the Edale.
