Advice & Guides If it feels like armour in your bike kit then the law demands it is actually proper, protective armour. Here's how to tell how effective your impact protection is...
Customers highly commend these trousers for their exceptional comfort and true-to-size fit. Many highlight the impressive AAA safety rating combined with stylish design, making them suitable for on and off-bike wear. The trousers are praised for their flexibility and the quality of the materials, with armour fitting subtly and enhancing safety. Although some mention minor adjustments with knee armour, overall satisfaction with quality and functionality is evident. Customers recommend them for their practicality and breathability, particularly in warm conditions.
I bought these for two reasons, this is the second summer in a row where it's been damn hot! All my other riding jeans and textiles are just too hot. Second was the look of cargo style jeans - I wanted something different. I'm a massive fan of Hood jeans however they are dual layer and just too hot in 30c heat. I looked most of the styles in the John Doe cargo range and it did take some time to get the right ones. The sizing is not the same, so if like me you are a 34 waist, you'll need to down size to a 33 or 32. I went 33 with a belt. One thig to be aware of - these only come with level 1 hip and knee armour, for this price I would have expected level 2. So I swapped then out for some level 2 D3O. As this armour is thicker, you do notice it with the slim fit, makes the cargo's tighter around the hips and back of the knees but it is ok. If you 'work out' down the gym and have larger thigh's and calves, I'd go with the regular fit. However, I bought these to be cooler in hot weather and they deliver, the single layer definitely paid off, add a mesh jacket like the Merlin Aero Mesh Riding jacket and you're sorted! All in all, a good pair of jeans that look great on and off the bike, comfortable enough for a days ride. Perfect for hot weather!
New rider not wanting bulky textile trousers for summer. Find these perfect on the bike feeling safe doing nothing daft on my T7 and being functional enough on the odd dry greenlane. Comfy off the bike too. Size wise I came down to, 32/32 (normally 33/32) worn on test ride just with short boots. Maybe a little short for this but will be wearing with longer boots for bigger rides. Excellent service from SBS after trying some on in store and then ordering more to try at home with full confidence after a call to th office that they would accept returns if they didn’t work for me!!
These are a great pair of riding trousers and other reviews you'll read about quality, function, protection etc. are all relevant.
The only thing I would say is the waist is loose. I am a 30 inch waist in all other trousers but had to wear these with a belt as they were very loose. I don't think a size down would work either as they would be too tight in other areas.
However, wearing a belt is no big deal for me.
Supremely comfortable, easily the most comfortable biker trousers I possess. Not sure whether they'd hold up in a spill on the open road, but fine round town. John Doe Knee armour looks and feels cheap, so you may want to upgrade that..
I like these trousers. They look great, and they’re quite comfortable. But for longer days the comfort reduces significantly.
Firstly the sizes are way off. Motorcycle clothing in general seems to be aimed towards boosting the moral of the older gentleman. But these go a step further. Be prepared to sizes at least two sizes lower than usual around the waist.
Secondly the area around the crotch is also fairly limited. After a while things get quite cramped around there, particularly is you slide forwards on your seat at all. “Be prepared to pick a leg” is all I’m going to say; that and get used to frequent adjustments.
Finally, I’ve had two pairs of these now. (The first were too big around the waist but kept because I couldn’t be bothered to return them.) Both pairs have had creases around the knees where the stitching has bunched the fabric up. It’s not all that noticeable on the bike, but it brings into question the quality control. As well as that they’ve both had a ‘wandering zip.’ As in the zip wanders from the top to the bottom throughout the day.
Overall I like these trousers, but they do come with issues
Hard wearing, sizing correct. I changed my order shortly after purchasing online. Sorted out with no fuss.
AAA rated supremely comfortable, cargo trousers beautifully made I’ve been riding for almost 50 years now and these are in the top few pairs of trousers I’ve owned. They fit so well with just enough stretch that you never think they are pulling here or nipping there simply excellent.
I didn’t like the knee armour mind and changed it for ghost armour more coverage and less noticeable. If I bought another pair of these I’d go for regular cut rather than slim as they can look a bit like odours being so slim in lower leg.
Size is good I ordered 33 inch and they fit true to size -I’m a 33 normally. Perfect.
I always have quality and size accuracy concerns when purchasing clothing online and as these jeans aren't cheap I was a bit dubious.
I based my order on the exact size of my favourite Levi's and the fit is absolutely perfect in every way. I don't ride much in the winter so haven't worn them on the bike yet but they look and feel top quality. I love the design, great pockets and the style. Very pleased for sure.
Feels like regular jeans, good size and great customer service from sportsbikeshop. Swapped the armour out for some level 2 s and still very comfortable
Trousers are a good fit, true to my actual sizing (I didn't need to size up or down). They are comfortable to wear and look great, albeit the material is thicker / heavier than I was perhaps expecting, but hey you can't expect reasonable protection without the material being a certain thickness. Overall, I'm very pleased with them. The item arrived much later than I was expecting but Sportsbikeshop kept me informed with regular delivery updates and even offered me a refund or alternative if I was unhappy with delivery time, so they could not have been fairer about it. I would definitely buy from Sportsbikeshop again, they seem a good / helpful company.
Went a different rout and chose three pairs of jeans so I could view them before purchase at the Birmingham branch, really makes sense doing it that way. I ended up with two out of the three I viewed, but my favourite pair are the John Doe mono Defender slim cut cargo jeans in Olive they are triple A rated, but the material though thick is really flexible and comfortable, the quality of the stitching is second to none, and a real useful feature is a zipped pocket just above the left cargo pocket, ideal for a transponder key. The jeans are very stylish and not overly warm off the bike. They certainly aren't the cheapest jeans you can buy, but they are one of the best, and size wise they are bang on...
Ordered my usual size and fit was spot on, seem excellent quality but haven't used on bike yet but confident they'll be fine given all the reviews I've watched.
Only criticism would be that the zip on the left hand pocket would have been better if it operated the other way round, closed facing back rather than frontwards.
Great quality and can barely feel the armor inside
Great trousers and look stylish enough to wear off the bike.
Note because of narrow legs your boots will not go inside them , not a problem if ankle boots worn
Not waterproof and armour a little thin
These Cargo Pants look and feel great quality. They do come up a little large unlike products from some manufacturers who think all bikers are built like members of a boy band. Some reviews suggest purchasing a size smaller than usual but I went for my size and lets just say I wont need the stretch function of the material but that's just fine with me. As usual SBS service was second to none and they arrived in double quick time.
These are very comfortable to wear both on and off the bike. They appear to be very well made with strong stitching and the fabric feels nice against the skin. The bottoms are narrow but fit snuggly into my boots which is a big plus.
These are quality riding trousers. The colour is definitely a black black rather than washed black so just beware of this if you are looking for a more used look. Excellent service for Sportsbikeshop as usual.
John Doe seem to be one of the few pant makers who offer waist sizes in 1" intervals and in short leg lengths, 33/30 in my case. Design wise, the Defender Cargo jeans are great cut and quality, the leg pocket is great for your phone. These are my second pair. Not cheap but worth the money.
