Advice & Guides If it feels like armour in your bike kit then the law demands it is actually proper, protective armour. Here's how to tell how effective your impact protection is...

Spade produce some great stuff quality and price wise. These trousers are value for money and do the job admirably. Warm and roomy (I removed the inner quilt trousers - bit too warm).
Now for the bad : the fit is unusual. I m a big lad so got a size to fit. The legs, bum and crotch are good, plenty of room for your man bits. The waist is huge, and comes up very high, which means it can fold over., there are two Velcro adjuster s but don t make a lot of difference. The buckle snapped after 2nd use (why use plastic), repaired using a cable tie.
If you want warm, waterproof and easy fitting for the bike, great. Not so much fun walking around in them, keep having to pull up. Belt loops would be ideal so braces could be added. I ll probably eyelet the waist band to fit braces.
Excellent value with discount from SBS. Material feels robust and good quality. More fitted than the regular Modena trouser, which when I tried on was reminiscent of an MC Hammer music video. Some nice features at this price point such as hip and knee armour and zipped vents in the legs.
Sizing is a little odd. My previous Spada trousers were a size large and were a little snug about the waist. Ordered a large again and they are massive. Spada says a large equates to a 34 waist but they are much larger than this. Even on the tightest setting on the adjustable waist they were falling down. Would recommend going down a size if you're not sure.
Went down to medium myself, a little snug around the ar*e but plenty room about the beer belly!
Bad points - Removable thermal liner only extends down to top of calf. Makes the trousers sit nicely over boots but you may experience a draft in the gap between your boot and the bottom of the liner. Nothing a pair of long socks or long johns won't sort. Rode to work today and temp was just above zero, only had the trousers on with no additional layers underneath and was still comfortable. Wouldn't want to do all day in them at this time of year but perfectly fine for half hour trip to work.
Yet to test waterproofing, stood up well to puddles and spray following Storm Babet but not been out in a downpour yet.
