Schuberth have released details of an “enhanced” version of their popular C5 flipfront helmet, which will be called the C5 GT.
It’ll be the first in a range of GT helmets offering upgrades over existing models, which the firm says will work in a similar way to M-series versions of BMW cars and bikes.
The C5 GT will join the 2027 line-up, with two key enhancements over the straight C5 – improved optical clarity, and better audio potential for riders who add a comms system.
Improved vision will come from a high-contrast visor that Schuberth says it has created using lessons learned from their Formula 1 car racing helmets.
A coating on the outside of the upgraded visor creates higher contrast than a regular clear visor, with Schuberth saying that will help reduce fatigue for riders covering large distances.
The coating gives the visor an iridium-like appearance, but Schuberth say it is about boosting performance rather than aesthetics.
The coating reduces light transmittance below the legal minimum for night-time use, so the high-contrast visor is supplied in addition to the standard clear visor.
The audio improvement comes courtesy of 40mm Harman Kardon speakers installed into the C5 GT, which Schuberth say are superior to the regular C5 speakers.
Schuberth pre-installs much of the communications system into the helmet at the time of manufacture, including the speakers. Riders who want to have inbuilt comms only need to add a module at the rear of the helmet and a control unit to the left side.
Those who do that will benefit from the new Harman Kardon speakers, which have been developed with Sena, one of two communications partners for Schuberth.
The new speakers have been optimised to suit the Schuberth SC2 comms system, which uses Sena technology.
They will also work with the Cardo-powered Schuberth SC Edge units.
The new audio set-up bridges the gap between the regular C5’s more basic 40mm speakers and the 53mm units pre-fitted into Schuberth’s C5 ANC noise-cancelling helmet.
We understand there will initially be no option for owners of the regular C5 to retro-fit either the Harman Kardon speakers or the high-contrast visor to their helmets. Schuberth tell us neither will be available as accessories or spares at the moment.
There’s no confirmed word on price for the C5 GT at the time of writing, but the new model is being unveiled at Milan’s EICMA show and we’ll be chasing that information so we can update this story as soon as possible.
