Advice & Guides Waterproof textile jackets don't have to be a big-money affair. Here are five budget belters...

Customers have praised the jacket for its comfort, warmth, and waterproof features, with some noting its excellent ventilation and fit. They highlight the jacket's quality construction, adjustable fit, and sufficient pockets, though some mention the need for a separate back protector. Many find it a great value for its durability in varying weather conditions. With positive feedback on its safety and functionality, customers are generally satisfied and would recommend it for biking purposes.
Good quality for price paid. User friendly construction.. Very warm with liners in.
Its the first time I've purchased a winter jacket by mail order, very pleased with the service from SBS
I’ve used Oxford jackets/trousers for a number of years – including a beloved Melbourne which I’ve just begrudgingly replaced after some 8 years daily service.
The Montreal 4.0 provides excellent protection especially in a price range that is normally the preserve of discount brands, although hardcore adventure riders may desire upgraded armour. Upgrading armour is a simple process, and one I would always recommend. Especially as the back protector doesn’t come as standard, so for the matter of a few pounds (and a certain degree of security) why wouldn’t you upgrade the armour? So far its only test has been an unruly child throwing a tin of Red Bull at me, but better safe than sorry (or covered in energy drink in the height of summer)
When it comes to motorcycle gear, protection should always be the top priority. The Montreal 4.0 jacket uses a polyester shell reinforced with 600D panels at the elbows and shoulders. This abrasion-resistant material is said to slide rather than instantly tear in the event of an accident, giving you precious time to come to a stop. I’ve no intention of trying this out, despite the best/worst efforts of Audi and BMW drivers in our locality, but its pleasant to know, nonetheless, and it has already earned the contempt of a pigeon who tried to hitch a ride on my left shoulder!
Talking of myopic 4 wheelers, one of the jackets best point is when illuminated by headlights, the reflective detailing on the chest, back, arms, and collar improves night-time visibility even to the blindest Audi drivers.
The fit is a little on the generous side, but that’s no bad thing for those of us who use bikes all year round and are used to layering, plus there’s several straps and drawstrings to ensure a good fit. The waterproofing is excellent, whether it’s a torrential downpour or that irritating spring/autumn mist that seems to worm its way in to everywhere - no more spending the day blaming the rest of the office for the odd "wet dog" aroma
Thank you for first class customer service.
Nice fitting jacket. Has not rained yet since I purchased, so yet to be put to the test in the wet.
Fits exactly to size and is very good quality for a low price.
I'm yet to try it in the rain but I can't see it being a problem.
Only thing I would change is the velcro strap on the sleeve is a little awkward to pull tight around the wrist/glove, it feels like it's back to front.
Good value for good quality product. This is a warm winter coat.
Extremely comfortable jacket with plenty pockets for mobile etc. Offers good protection and versatility with removable inner lining to adapt to weather conditions. High visibility markings provide confidence in being seen by other road users.
The Jacket fits well and is highly adjustable, it is very comfortable if a little tight around the collar. I feel well protected while riding, although I was a little put out that I had to order the back protector seperatley, feels like a sneaky price increase but you cannot grumble too much at safety. I have not worn it in torrential rain yet, but it is certainly coping with the autumnal showers. I am a daily commuter, so having a good jacket is important to me, and it needs to do the job in all weathers, but so far so good. As always SBS service has been great and I was able to reserve it at the store to try and buy. Great price - Great jacket.
I’ve never owned an armoured jacket before, the weight is my only gripe, apart from that it’s a great jacket
Firstly thanks to sportsbike shop Hillingdon for brilliant service
This jacket in my opinion is great managed to do 700 miles in a weekend and it lived up to expectations whilst touring the Highlands of Scotland
Only niggly thing for me was stud fastening at the neck found it really hard to get fastened ideal if it was a velcro set up but found jacket warm and kept out a downpour that I rode in for an hour
Definitely would recommend but Oxford sort that neck fastening
Jacket was bought to be used as an everyday jacket for commuting to work and back. The hi viz flashes, warmth, comfort and the fact it’s waterproof makes it an ideal winter jacket for the darker mornings and evenings. I found it’s pockets are great size the sizing was very good I’m generally an 2XL and the 2XL fitted me perfectly. The staff at the Preston store were also very helpful.
Very good fit and delivered as agreed
I could adjust the jacket to fit close , so it doesn't act like a parachute when riding .
Only used in hot weather so can't comment on rain resistance, but has loads of zips that reveal vents to keep you cool in this heat wave , excellent....
Fits really well and received excellent advice and service at the birmingham store well pleased with my purchase and excellent service received
Very warm with liner in (cosy) good match with my new pants.
Good comfortable fit. Warm and dry with plenty of ventilation
I tried two other Oxford jackets and found the armour in the elbows was in the wrong place for me. This one was in the correct place and so I bought it and rode back home with it on. The vents are just right for me too as they are not over large and easy to use. Front pockets are large enough to carry a helmet bag and my large phone and the inside is laminated so only a warm liner to remove when temperatures allow so ideal for a touring jacket, I never use the rear pocket but it is large enough to carry waterproof trousers if needed.
I have a few niggles and this is across most of my Jackets apart from the Hinterlands. The neck aperture is a little cosy and the press stud is almost too tight, yes I have a fat neck, but still some sort of Velcro or sliding system would be good. This jackets zips on the sleeves out of the box are very hard to unzip/zip up, application of something to free them up is necessary.
