Advice & Guides Laminated waterproofing is taking over the world. Our video runs through our top options
Customers rave about the Rukka Nivala 2.0 jacket, praising its comfort, warmth, and excellent quality. Many highlight its durable nature, waterproof features, and effective venting system. The jacket includes protective elements such as chest and back protectors, enhancing safety while riding. The inner jacket, which can be worn separately, adds versatility. Despite its high price, customers regard it as a valuable investment for year-round use. They appreciate the comfort offered by its stretch fabric and believe it outperforms previous versions and alternatives.
I previously bought the Rukka Nivala trousers and they have been excellent, at the time I was using an integrated airbag jacket but now I have gone over to the tech air plasma I decided to get the Nivala jacket. What can you say, its an excellent jacket. Its Rukka, what more can you say. You get what you pay for.
These jackets may be expensive but you definitely get what you pay for since I purchased this I've not used my heated jacket so warm and dry worth every penny on top of that so comfy to wear all day long my third jacket due to weight loss
Great quality jacket with a great discount from original price.
I’ve owned a lot of “waterproof” motorcycle jackets over the years. Most start off brilliant, then slowly let water in, get heavy when soaked, or lose comfort after a season or two. The Rukka Nivala 2 is the first jacket I’ve owned where you genuinely understand why premium kit exists the moment you put it on.
Yes — it’s expensive. But there’s a difference between expensive and costly. Replacing cheaper gear every couple of winters quickly adds up. This feels like a long-term investment rather than another upgrade.
Comfort & Weight
When you first pick the jacket up you notice the weight. It’s substantial. This isn’t lightweight summer kit pretending to be touring gear. But once it’s on, the stretch construction and tailoring completely change the experience. On the bike it feels supportive rather than heavy, and movement isn’t restricted at all. Long rides and commuting are where it really shines — no pressure points, no stiffness, just solid comfort.
Waterproofing
This is honestly the biggest difference compared to anything else I’ve owned.
The Gore-Tex Pro laminated shell means the outer fabric doesn’t soak up water. Rain beads off instead of turning the jacket cold and heavy like drop-liner systems do. After riding in proper UK weather, not just light showers, you quickly realise this isn’t marketing hype. You arrive dry, the jacket dries quickly afterwards, and you’re not dealing with that damp, clammy feeling cheaper waterproofs eventually give you.
Safety
Protection is serious without feeling bulky.
Level 2 armour throughout, including the back protector, gives real confidence. The reinforcement in key impact areas feels reassuring without making the jacket uncomfortable or restrictive. It feels built for riders who actually spend time on the road rather than occasional weekend use.
The Down Jacket — Unexpectedly Brilliant
The removable down inner jacket deserves special mention.
It isn’t just a liner — it’s a proper standalone jacket. Warm, lightweight, and perfectly usable off the bike. During winter rides it transforms the Nivala into serious cold-weather kit, and off the bike it’s something you’d happily wear walking around town. That alone adds genuine value.
Price & Value
There’s no getting away from the price tag when new. But now the Nivala 3 has been released, the Nivala 2 can often be found at a much better price — and that makes it a very smart buy.
Considering you get Gore-Tex Pro waterproofing, Level 2 protection, premium construction and a usable down jacket included, it starts to make real sense financially if you ride regularly.
Final Thoughts
After years of buying jackets that promised waterproofing and durability but never quite delivered long term, this feels different. Comfortable, properly protective, genuinely waterproof, and warm enough for real winter riding.
Premium gear isn’t always necessary — but when you ride through British winters and long commutes, you understand why something like this exists.
Expensive? Yes.
Worth every penny? Absolutely.
After going back and forth with a few jackets, i returned to Rukka - their jackets ooze quality and seem to fit me best from all other jackets. Previously had the Nivala and happy to return, not bee road tested yet, but I'm sure it will be absolutely fine. Great service from SBS as usual.
Great fit and the huge D30 armour doesn’t interfere with the comfort. It can keep on raining as much as it likes now. I won’t be getting wet!
Been wanting one of these for a while and so worth the wait, the fit is amazing. I’ve got broad square shoulders and it’s cut perfectly for me, it’s very comfy and not too bulky or heavy. The armour is top D30 all round and you don’t even notice it’s there considering how thick it is. The jacket is very warm, comfortable and easy to wear all day long. Arm vent zips were making the arms a bit at first but after a short while, they suppled up and were fine.
They are expensive, but so worth the price as my other Rukka items have lasted for ages without fail, just wanted to update them a bit. Long warranties too with impeccable build and finish, totally pleased as punch!!!!
Incredibly comfortable, looking forward to wearing it on a rainy day.
This is my third RUKKA jacket over the last 25 years and they have never let me down. This jacket with the armour and "down inner" are super warm and comfy. all with 6 years guarantee. only down side is the price.
Took the plunge and purchased this along with the bottoms after much deliberation as this is a serious investment. It does not disappoint.
Warm into negative degrees C, and completely dry during rain, however heavy. It has made commuting far more tolerable and encourages you to ride for pleasure during the winter months, something I have never previously cared for.
As with other comments, the arms come up an inch too short for me but this is not a problem if you have large cuffs on your gloves, or use the double cuff system with a pair of gloves like the Rukka Fiennes.
Overall, really pleased with the purchase, the service from SBS and the extended warranty from Rukka.
It's expensive, let's get that out the way to start with. So look for discounts, if you can get them.
But being an all weather, all year round biker I've gone through many textile jackets over the years. I'd worked out that with the features, the reputation, and the warranty this has, the lifetime cost would be no more than any other jacket. So economically, if you can do it it makes sense.
It's a very comfortable jacket. It sits well, all the armour is in the right place and barely noticeable. I have a tendency to bursitis in my left elbow and other armour aggravates it. Not so with this jacket.
I got a Euro 52, because my arms are a little long, but this fits very well, almost like a tailored suit. Snug, but not tight. My wife says the trousers and jacket look a lot less bulky than other gear.
I love the neoprene collar. Other reviews have said this feels a little stiff. I don't think so, but it fits snugly around your neck, over my buff and is very cosy. If you can keep your neck warm it makes a huge difference. I don't find it restricts head movement at all.
There is an internal cuff that tucks in your gloves and the outer shell goes over the top of the gauntlet cuff. This also works well to exclude draughts, drips and keep you arms cosy.
The heavy showers I've been in so far have just been shrugged off and I've noticed the jacket dries much quicker than a drop liner.
So far, I'm very pleased.
Once you get past the price, this is a phenomenal jacket. The high collar keeps out all the wind and chill, and the rest of the jacket is ultra comfortable. The down liner is fantastic and warm and works brilliantly as a destination layer - I have used it a number of times as a standalone jacket. The double liner for keeping the cuffs waterproof is brilliant as well. The only reservation I have is that it is only A rated but hopefully I won’t have to test that! Would thoroughly recommend. 10/10
This is a very fine product and well thought out with top of the range materials.
Let's get one thing out the way it's bloody expensive. But it is well made and the thermal under jacket is very nice with both on you are very warm .main jacket has big pocket two on outside and one waterproof one inside. I had to go up one size to get length in body as I am 6 ft 4 in. I would have liked ajustable straps on arms for this much money and not sure on one piece chest protection I think it would of been better with two pieces so when you go any where you can undo jacket with out it flopping about every where. And one more thing you need a long neck as it has tall collar which can catch on your helmet and stops you turning your head from left to right quickly.
Getting a Rukka jacket has been on my wish list for a while and managed to save up for one. It does not disappoint. Very comfy, fits very well, great quality and so light for how good it is.
Really impressed with this jacket - does exactly as product description states. Jacket is high quality, as you would expect from Rukka & has kept me warm and dry on an unexpected new commute to work of 40 miles a day. Comfort level is great, fit is as expected based on your measurements, overall length is good and means the jacket does not ‘ride up’ when travelling. Cost as expected for the quality, you truly do get what you pay for with this one.
Great jacket, fits perfectly, very comfortable. Still pretty warm without the liner but I swear that with the liner, you could ride in sub zero temperatures and still be ok ! These are not cheap but you get what you pay for. Extremely impressed
Took me a while to take the plunge and buy this due to its price, but I tried on several Rukka jackets as well as RST, Dainesse and Klim. This was by far the most comfortable and best fit.
Flawless in the rain so far, some torrential downpours on the way to work!, The collar is high but works a treat and keeps out water and cold air, cuffs are brilliant, will be great in the winter months, the separate down liner is more or less my everyday jacket now so worth it from that respect.
Despite the armour being huge (really huge), it doesnt feel it when the jacket is on, it fits seamlessly into the jacket and you barely notice it.
Vents work well on warmer days.
Happy with my purchase, it just needs to last several years and several thousand miles to get my moneys worth
