Reviews Old-school tech meets clever innovation - Motoairbag’s tethered vest reacts fast and offers serious protection with zero charging or subscription fees

Customers appreciate the MotoAirBag V4 for its comprehensive safety features and EN approval. It's praised for comfort across various jacket types and seasons, with adjustable sizing options. The vest is noted for its mechanical, battery-free operation, enhancing convenience. Though some find it slightly heavy, customers report not noticing this while riding. The vest’s fitting is commonly regarded as well-informed by excellent in-store experiences. Overall, customers express confidence in its protective qualities, viewing it as a valuable investment for safer riding.
I've had this vest for around nine months now. I'm an airbag vest fan so have some decent experience of airbag vests. I bought this one after watching the bennets Bike Social video on airvests, which I'd definitely recommend watching if you're considering buying an airvest.
I've been impressed with this one. It's well made and exudes an air of quality. It's heavy but no different to other airvests I've had. The attachment mechanism is forgiving if you forget to detach (I've not managed to set it off accidentally - yet!) and vest is comfortable in use - but do try it on before you buy. I bought the optional summer attachment which is basically a zip in mesh liner with fully armoured arms attached and it's a breeze in summer. I also got the optional hiviz vest which I have used, and which works fine.
All in all I'm happy with this vest and don't have any niggles.
I bought this after watching an MCN review on YouTube. At over £500 it’s a serious investment, but I ride all year round—around 12–14k miles in all conditions—and wanted another layer of protection for my aging skeleton.
The Good Bits
The fit is excellent, and the analogue tethered trigger gives a reassuringly simple, mechanical connection to the bike. You can attach it using either the bolt-on webbing strap with a D-ring or the seat-strap option. I use the bolt-on version; on my V-Strom 1050 the length is just right, though I don’t think it would have been long enough on my old Triumph Trophy 1215.
The airbag fits comfortably over all my riding gear and has plenty of adjustment via the side zips and waist straps. The main zip feels robust and is easy to use with gloves on. The grey colour matches most kit—at least according to my wife!—and thankfully I’ve not had to put the airbag’s protection to the test. Another reason I chose this model is that replacement gas charges are relatively inexpensive and easy to fit, with clear YouTube instructions available.
The Not-So-Good Bits
The karabiner clip is stress-rated and functional, but it can be awkward with gloves on. At this price I’d have preferred something a little more refined—there is an upgraded clip available, but it costs an extra £30.
After about four months (roughly 5,000 miles), the side zip stopped staying closed. This led to a warranty return which unfortunately took around six weeks, as the jacket had to be sent back to Italy for repair.
Visibility could also be improved. There are a couple of reflective patches and some hi-viz striping, but I’d personally prefer more for safety. Storage is limited too: there’s only a single small front pocket, and wearing the airbag blocks access to your jacket pockets.
Ventilation is non-existent. It was very warm to wear during the summer, although a mesh liner is available—perhaps something I’ll look at for next year.
SPORTSBIKESHOP Service
I have to give credit where it’s due: the service from SPORTSBIKESHOP in Bristol has been excellent. I asked for a couple of sizes to be sent to the store so I could try them on, and they had everything ready and were genuinely helpful. When the warranty issue came up, their customer service team clearly explained that the repair would take longer than usual because the airbag had to go “home” to Italy for safety-guaranteed work. They kept me informed throughout, and I really can’t fault them.
No electronics = great.
Two airbags one for front and one for the back. For summer use you need a very light mesh summer jacket.
This seems to be a great airbag vest, offering comprehensive protection to mitigate the effects of potentially life changing injuries.
Attach and detach could do with being easier - The D ring on the bike and carabiner on the vest could both be bigger and easier to feel, as you can't see behind you with a helmet on.
It is, by nature, not very breathable and pretty heavy. Once on the move, you don't really notice though. It's a shame that the mesh jacket that it can attach to is difficult to find in the UK - I've ordered one from Italy for the hot weather. The safest gear is the stuff you wear.
Pocket is good. Another one on the other side would be nice.
Sizing wise, I was in between L/XL and XXL/3XL according to the website, but the 3XL was really big in real life - The L/XL has plenty of space.
Overall very good. Riding bikes (especially if you do it enthusiastically) is dangerous. If I come off, I guarantee that I'll be glad that I'll be wearing this.
Great product for all round body and neck protection. Comfortable to wear over your existing jacket. I have worn it in 30 degree heat and when on the move could feel cooling air flow though the mesh. Highly recommend this product and great service from sportsbikeshop.
It’s there to do a job. It’s quite heavy and hot though. I put up with it even in this hot weather because if you do ever hit something, this one will give you a better than average chance of protection.
I bought one of these for myself and one for the wife. It’s quite hard to give this a review on how effective it is without crashing, but given the positive review by Bennett’s on YouTube, it seems to be one of the most protective jackets available. It seems well made and the sizes seem to be true to size, at least for us, it is quite bulky, so on a hot day, If I am just going for a bimble on the moors I may leave it at home, but for faster more adventurous riding I think I will be wearing it all the time. I did um and ar about buying an airbag jackets, I do wear decent kit, but do like to just swing my leg over the bike and just ride. Modern biking does seem a bit too much of a palavor sometimes with riding modes, gps etc. but you just throw this jacket on like a waistcoat and clip it on, which is why I went for a manual jacket rather than an electronic one which may need software updates and battery charging which I just can’t be bothered with.
I'm 6'6 tall, so this vest fits over a Big Mans RST jacket with winter gear on!! Also for summer use it has pockets to fold the jacket to make it smaller!!
It's well made, slightly heavy but if this vest protects me from a serious injury I put up with that.
Hopefully it will never have to be used but some how I doubt that on the British Roads of today with the twats behind that wheel!!!!!
Although I have not had to experience the product working as yet i.e. it has not had to inflate, I have viewed my partners jacket inflating and it was effective. The sizes and shape fit better than some of the other air vest products I tried on an viewed and offers more body protection. It is comfortable to rid in as it is not too long, again some of the other product are long in the back and push up when riding from the seat, this one does not. I also still have a good range of head movement when riding which some of the other jackets did not allow as much for.
Looked at a few reviews before purchasing this air vest. Feels heavy ish when you put it on but when on the bike doesn't feel heavy actually comfortable. Can stand up on the bike when tethered. Is a bit pricey but if it does the job in the event of an accident must be worth it.
The best feels really well made. I normally wear an XL jacket and originally went with the L/XL size. When this arrived I found it to be a bit tight, even at full ‘extension’ so I ordered the 2XL size to store and the difference for me was night and day, so stayed with the larger size.
Sportsbikeshop were OK with the change as expected.
The vest is quickly forgetting about when riding, you just have to adjust your on/off procedure slightly to remember to hook yourself in and out.
There is another zip inside the vest that doesn’t seem to get a mention, I can only guess it’s for an additional layer, but it’s a bit of a unknown at the time of writing this.
So far all good, but as I say in my title - I hope it’s a waste of money and I never have to use it!!
Got after searching or the other Airbags on the market, what draw me to Moto Airbag, is you can recharge the vest and doesn't need to be returned to manufacture , you get used to have the draw cord.
As someone who enjoys the thrill of the open road but would still prefer to keep all my limbs attached, I decided to invest in the MOTOAIRBAG MAB V4 Modular Airbag Vest aka, my new high-tech guardian angel in black.
First off, this thing looks seriously cool. It s got a sleek, tactical vibe that says, Yes, I m responsible but I still look like I could ride into a Fast & Furious movie.
Now let s talk safety. Wearing this vest gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling the kind that says, If gravity wins today, at least I ve got a fighting chance. It s like having a secret bodyguard who only shows up when things go sideways literally. The mechanical trigger system is brilliantly simple: no batteries, no recharging, no software updates. Just good old-fashioned cable-powered peace of mind. Tug the tether, and boom instant marshmallow mode.
And yes, I did spend five minutes pretending to crash into pillows just to hear that satisfying poof. You can t blame me this thing is basically a life-saving inflatable jacket, and I had to test the drama. (It passed.)
Jokes aside, this vest is a serious game-changer. As motorcyclists, we accept a certain level of risk but that doesn t mean we shouldn t stack the odds in our favor. The MAB V4 adds that extra buffer of safety without turning you into a robot or sacrificing comfort. Fits nicely over my jacket, doesn t restrict movement, and gives my girlfriend one less reason to worry every time I head out.
In summary:
Stylish
Practical
Might make you feel like Batman
Hopefully never needs to activate but if it does, I know it s got my back (literally).
Highly recommend to any rider who values their spine, ribs, and continued existence. Ride safe, inflate only when necessary!
Had to choose between an under jacket or over jacket airbag. I was leaning to the under jacket variant but as soon as I tried on this airbag I knew it was the one. It fits perfectly and I don't even feel it's there. Adds wind protection too therefore adds warmth. I have a textile jacket and a leather jacket and fits perfectly on both. I went to the Glasgow store with both my riding jackets and tried different airbags. The staff were great and their advice was invaluable.
Hopefully, I'll never have to experience this going off, but initial impressions are that this is well made and offers lots of adjustments to get a good fit. I bought this off the back of Bennetts reviews as it offers a good deal of protection. It is a bit heavy, but you don't really notice when you're wearing it. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase.
Having worn a back protector for many years and riding almost every day I finally went for an air jacket. I opted for the MotoAirBag V4 due to its CE approval and long-term European market leader.. although its fairly new to the UK they are very popular in Europe and I've seen them many time abroad... I tried on a demo in the shop and got the right fitting, it looks stylish, plenty of adjustable straps/zips.. it feels heavy but once on you don't notice the weight and its a lot more comfortable than the back-protectors... fitting the lead to the bike was easy although the rear coupling is a bit awkward as you have to reach behind and find the coupling, time will tell if this gets on my nerves...
Overall I'm happy, great looking vest, feels good, happy with both front and rear air bags (hopefully I will never use)... so far so good..
I'd been considering airbags for over a year. After watching the Bike Social video comparing their safety ratings I wanted to try this on for fit.
It's comfortable, I thought I'd have to go a size larger to fit over my clothing but I don't and there's still room for more clothing beneath. I've worn it over leather and fabric jackets and in the summer will probably wear over the MAB sleeves… which I'm going to buy separately.
I've not accidentally triggered it by getting off the bike and haven't yet inflated it.
Much more comfortable than my level 2 back protector I used before.
